NZ On Air connects and reflects the people ofAotearoa New Zealand. It’s role is to deliver authentic, quality, and diversepublic media that meets and reflects the changing needs of its audiences. Theorganisation wanted to shift to a more contemporary look and feel to helpinspire Kiwis to find funded content.

NZOn Air didn’t want to do a full and costly re-design of their logo, preferringto put their funds into content creation, but they were overdue for a anupgrade. We worked together to achieve a significant shift in their branding withoutthe cost involved with a rebrand.

The first change was an update to the organisation’s logo — it was about 12 years since the last full update. The English and Te Reo names were given equal weighting. The biggest shift was moving away from the previous identity's full spectrum of rainbow colours in the logo to a more punchy colour palette. The logo could be rendered in any colour from this palette as a solid colour, providing much greater flexibility to differentiate NZ On Air's individual areas of activity and sub-brands.

This new identity was then applied to create a fresh animation sequence — the ‘logobug’ that is used on content — incorporating key design elements that speak tot he form and function of NZ On Air. The iconic 'swoosh' transitions from a sound wave into the islands of Aotearoa, alluding to funded content connecting with audiences across the motu.

Both the static logo and animated logo bug are now only available in light or dark versions – to better complement the wide variety of places they may appear.

This new look has given their statutory reports new energy and increased impact. As they had access to stunning photography from a wide range of sources, Moxie chose to replace all the photo backgrounds with bold popping colours, effectively unifying the different images into one visual family. We took care when designing the iconography to reflect Aotearoa’s diverse multi-cultural sense of identity. We achieved this by restraining the colour used in the icons to predominately black and white and referencing the sense of geometry and symmetry present in both Māori and Pacific aesthetics.

To finish, we worked with NZ On Air to update their Accreditation Requirements guides, including new content accreditation requirements such as content funded specifically for social media sites like Instagram, YouTube and TikTok.
